I loved the Matrix movies, even the 2nd and 3rd, which many people found boring and too "talky". But I didn't like the 2nd comix book. It seemed I was reading the same text, that made the same points, over and over again. Yes, the Matrix is a computer simulated reality. Yes, that computer simulated reality seems so real. Yes, we can do almost anything we want, if we control the Matrix code with our mind. But it feels like I've heard/read that a thousand times now. What next? What does it mean if machines can create a Matrix and wage war? Do they have souls? Spirits? Do they have innate value as well? How do we reconcile the human tensions between our bodies, minds, and spirits?
None of this was really addressed, only a brief line about how the Agents seemed as bored as the humans in one of the stories.
The one good feature about this comic was it did address the points of view of the blue pills in a couple of stories. Which is important, because I heard Morpheus go on about how the whole point of the war was to free the blue pills in the Matrix. Yet never a moments thought was given as to the impact of a battle killing tens,, if not hundreds or thousands of blue pills. Innocents and noncombatants are always killed in any war. It is...inevitable. Yet a moral force, fighting on behalf of said noncombatants, at least has concern for, and seeks to minimize these casualties, while not being paralyzed by these concerns.
However, in the end, after reading this comic, I didn't feel I had any real additional insight into the Matrix, and the questions surrounding it. And ultimately, I found that very disappointing.
