This is a dark and gritty comic book story that totally works. Mercifully not a poorly-conceived re-imagining of some prior property, this is a wholly original story with all-new characters. Perhaps if vintage '80s Frank Miller had written "Despicable Me," he might've conceived of something akin to this novella covering the epic sado-masochistic, romantic/nemesis relationship between two superpowered individuals, where the lines between good and bad are nearly indistinguishable given the gray morality and odd ambitions of both characters. But instead of watching seasons of a television show or reading volumes of graphic novels, the entire course of their complex rivalry is economically diffused to its purest essence, in an amazing story that covers their entire lives. The concept of making the "supervillain" protagonist a woman also overflows with originality, excitement and intrigue in its novel take and brilliant themes for an often cliched character.

Especially for fans of comic-books or superhero movies, it was an entirely refreshing experience to read something without any prior expectations or future commitments. Every other superhero story now comes with both a reader's prior understanding of the characters, and a knowledge they will continue indefinitely onwards to the next episode of the series/franchise. This book is a one-off, where anything can happen and surprisingly does. It's great to see something so epic and powerful told in such a light and easy burst.
