As You Wish Jackson Pearce Books
When I first picked up As You Wish, I didn't know what to expect. The only things I knew about Jackson Pearce was that she's pretty entertaining (I watch her vlogs religiously) and that she's written a book that I've wanted for a long time, called Sisters Red.As it turns out, As You Wish was not only a fun read. It also made me want to get my hands on Jackson's other books as well, making me very confident that I'll enjoy them just as much, if not more. The poor main character of this novel has dealt with love and loss, like many teenagers her age. The only difference was that her ex boyfriend and now-best-friend turned out to be gay and for some reason, she was the only one that couldn't see it coming. Oh, I'm sure this happens a lot. At one time, I was almost positive that it would happen to me once Lance Bass (the first love of my life) came out of the closet. After all, it did not, yet I still felt that I could relate to Viola.
Like Viola, I spent my high school years feeling broken and as if I didn't quite belong with the people that surrounded me. This constant wishing caused a jinn (or genie) to be summoned to grant her three wishes. At first, she denied the jinn's plea to wish. He didn't care for what she wished for, he only wanted to get back to his home. The more time he spent on this earth, the more he felt himself aging. Eventually, one of the wishes came out of her mouth and it made her happy for a while, until Viola realized that she wanted something completely different.
To me, the story is about making the right choices, not only for you, but for the people that surround you. Jinn's character grew on me from the moment he broke protocol to show himself in front of Viola's best friend. Jackson Pearce really knows how to make you beg Viola not to wish, because as soon as she does, you know that Jinn will disappear from the story.

As You Wish Jackson Pearce Books Reviews
Viola Cohen is an invisible girl in her high school. She's a reasonably talented artist and has a loving nature, but there always seems to be a piece of her that's missing. She's brokenhearted enough that a jinn appears, summoned by her soul-deep longing, and he tells her that it's his job to grant her three wishes. Viola resists the idea of whooshing her life into a better state, and Jinn (as she names him) gets ticked off at her indecisiveness, since he's stuck on Earth until she makes her wishes, and he'd rather return to the jinn homeworld, Caliban, where everything is beautiful and changeless.
I adore the dual-POV in this book--too often in YA, we only get the girl's thoughts, and the guy is automatically rendered mysterious and appealing simply because we, the readers, have no way of knowing what's going on in his head. In As You Wish, Viola and Jinn are equally important characters and the story is strengthened by giving them equal page-time.
Jinn is the breakout character in this novel. His thought-process is exquisite and initially hilarious, because he has his own brand of supernatural OCD and is horrified by the tiny changes in himself when he ages, even if it's only a few minutes' worth of aging. His character growth and gradual maturity are really something to behold, and it's intensely gratifying to see him morph from freaking out over every little delay in the wishing process, to wanting more time to experience the closeness and companionship that he and Viola have come to share.
I like Viola, but I got ticked at her in the middle of the novel, for acting entitled and bratty. She wallows in self-pity far too often--a fact her best friend Lawrence points out--and she wants other people to make her life complete, instead of trying to change her life on her own terms. But she redeems herself with a couple of beautiful displays of human compassion, and I'm back to loving her.
As in all good supernatural YA, As You Wish explores some deeper issues--the nature of happiness, personhood, and free will, particularly. Viola learns valuable lessons about the manipulation of free will, and Jinn sees what's it's like to be an individual, dealing with the pain and chaos that come from loving and being loved in return. He's from Caliban, a beautiful but neutered world of eternal stasis, and as he begins to long for something more, his desire is palpable and emotionally moving.
I will also add that this book got me crying, twice. Good, cathartic tears, though. The writing is smooth, the romance is deeply touching, and I highly recommend As You Wish.
I was first introduced to the writings of Jackson Pearce through an audiobook of her story The Sisters Red (which was amazing on so many levels). So I thought I would give one of her earlier books a try. The first notable thing about As You Wish is that it is about a jinn (genie)! How many YA books are about that? Not many if any that I've came across. So, points for Jackson on that end. I found the world and rules of Jinn very interesting. It sort of reminded me of a supernatural dystopian universe maybe even a little like Brave New World? This is a book that is told from Jinn's and Viola. I must admit that I much preferred Jinn's perspective over Viola's. The main downfall in this book (for me) was my inability to connect with her on any level. It can be a real problem with a book when you can't connect with the main character. One of the biggest problems I had with her was that she lost her man and because of that her world fell apart. Many of us have had our share of heartbreak and went into a funk, but we didn't stop living our lives for months and months on end (especially in high school). How does Viola get over this said funk? She gets another man! I just didn't find this admirable. On the other hand there are girls out there that this happens too, so it wasn't implausible. I guess I was just expecting that quintessential strong female lead that I found in Sisters Red. The one thing I did really like about Viola was the thought she put into making her wishes. I know that I would have been shallow and wished for more materialistic things...like a never ending supply of YA books and a mansion, and lastly new clothes whenever I wanted. The ending of the story was a very nice touch when it came. I was wondering right until the end how Ms.Pearce would work everything out and she didn't disappoint my romantic heart.
