I have owned this book for quite awhile but hesitated beginning it as I am not familiar with the main character. Do not make this mistake, for what happened is that I now want to learn more about Mrs. Dorothy Parker.I knew about the actor and enjoyed his work from the black and white movie days. Robert Benchley was in Fred Astaire movies, and so many others. I also knew about Monty Woolley whom I've learned from this book was really re-enacting Alexander Woollcott, in 'The Man Who Came to Dinner' a true favorite of mine. This book is a treasure trove of the personalities of the roaring twenties and up to forties.
So, I love the characters, but what about why they have gathered together in a book, a mystery book no less? Well, that is the brilliance of author, J.J. Murphy. He wove a intricate mystery story revolving the times, and personalities of the days. A man is found murdered beneath the historic Round Table at the Algonquin Hotel, in Manhattan.
While Dorothy is busy guzzling bathtub gin and dreaming of an out of touch romance with Mr. Benchley, she is also mothering a newcomer, William Faulkner, or humorously named Mr. Dachshund. A witness to the murder, William is in danger, but soon it is realized so is the others at the table.
The police are rough and ruthless at this time in history, as I've learned from the incredible series of Ms. Victoria Thompson. Also, the Prohibition times make characters such as the infamous Mickey Finn come alive.
There were moments in the novel where I shuddered, said aloud, "Oh No!", and felt like I was watching one of the movies with James Cagney etc. This book was delicious and I will return to read the next edition. It was a page turner for me.
Do Not Wait to read this book. I wish I had sooner!

Murder Your Darlings Algonquin Round Table Mystery JJ Murphy 9780451231994 Books Reviews
J.J. Murphy's first in his Algonquin Round Table series, Murder Your Darlings (January 2011) is a thoroughly delightful read. Part screwball comedy, part literary spoof, this mystery stars Dorothy Parker, William Faulkner, Robert Benchley and others solving a murder when a prominent drama critic is found stabbed with a fountain pen under the famous Round Table at the Algonquin Hotel. Don't be put off if you've never heard of the Algonquin Round Table--Murphy supplies whatever background you need, and you don't have to have read Parker to catch her rapid fire humor.
Murphy's depiction of New York in the 1920's is rich and satisfying. Dorothy Parker and her cohorts fire off witty wisecracks that will keep you chortling. The scene in which Faulkner "finds his voice" is worth the price of admission--never has such a dense and difficult writer been rendered with such fun.
If you're a fan of Jacqueline Winspear's mysteries, this series is an excellent addition to her gorgeous, more melancholy depiction of the period between the World Wars. Murphy offers some serious moments when the dark shadow left by World War I breaks through the hilarity, but the merry crew generally brushes off these moments by knocking back a few illicit drinks at Tony Soma's Prohibition era speakeasy. The reader knows that there'd be hell to pay if this were "real life" but for the moment we're invited to relax and have fun with no clouds in the sky.
If you want to laugh, immerse yourself in New York in the 20's with some of America's famous literati, and solve a good who-dunnit on the way, you'll like this book. I'm looking forward to the second in this series, You Might As Well Die. For more mystery and historical-fiction revews [...]
I loved this madcap mystery starring Dorothy Parker, the 20th Century's "Queen of the Quip," her colleagues at the famed Algonquin Round Table and sundry famous contemporaries. This book was wonderfully witty and often hilarious and was a delight to read.
Arriving at the Algonquin dining room a bit early for lunch, Ms. Parker discovers under the table, the body of a literary rival stabbed to death with a fountain pen. With the help of her cohorts, she sets out to solve the case. Despite many uproarious misadventures, this engrossing mystery draws to a conclusion as the gang embarks on a wild race from the Algonquin to Greenwich Village in a frantic attempt to nab the killer and save a colleague.
I enjoyed this book from cover to cover and can't wait to read the next installment in this series.
I picked up Murder Your Darlings not really sure if I would like it or not. Historical books sometimes fall flat for me if I'm very well acquainted with the real people the characters are based on.
I am truly delighted to say that I loved this book. J. J. Murphy certainly knew Dorothy Parker well. She also knew those who made up the Round Table very well. I loved the period details and the doses of reality that our country faced at the time. This book is set in the 1920s in New York and the it wasn't called the Roaring Twenties for nothing. Murphy makes the era come alive and also shows the shadow WWI still held over people, but she does this with a light hand so the book is not as somber as some set in this era.
Then there is the humor! I loved the word play and snappy dialog, come-backs and jokes.
Dorothy Parker is one of my favorite early 20th Century writers and she had quite the personality. Her wittiness and zing shines with new life in this cozy mystery. Murphy just hits every note right with this cozy mystery. This book is one you don't want to rush through or you'll miss too many truly funny things.
I found the book to be very well written and had me laughing quite a bit. The mystery is light, but well plotted. The book has a great, quick flow. I highly recommend this book to cozy mystery lovers, especially ones who enjoy a historical setting along with their mystery. Overall, wonderful entertaining cozy mystery. I will certainly be on the lookout for the next book in this fabulous new series.
